In WWI, before America joins the war, a group of young American men arrive in France to volunteer as fighter pilots. Under the tutelage of the harsh but fair Captain Thebault, they become aces in the sky, but it soon becomes clear that their life expectancy is short, and only a few of them will see the war through to its conclusion.
