Ian McKellen produces an assured Oscar-nominated performance in this fictionalised biopic of horror film director James Whale, the man who created the original Frankenstein in 1931.

By the 50s Whale was no longer a Hollywood player because of his homosexuality, and entertains himself by giving interviews to fans of his work. When handsome gardener Clayton Boone (Brendan Fraser) is hired by Whale's housekeeper Hanna (Lynn Redgrave), Whale becomes entranced and begins an unlikely and complex friendship with the new arrival - one that will affect both of them profoundly...
