It's hard to stop when you're a serial killer, especially when you're as dedicated to your art as Dexter Morgan clearly is. Slicing up a fixed number of victims was never going to satisfy the man who by day works for the Miami police as a blood-splatter analyst, and by night is a particularly vicious vigilante murderer.

And as the second series of this controversial, shocking drama swings into action, Dexter (Michael. C Hall, pictured, right) is keen to continue his lethal "hobby". It's been nearly 40 days since he took his brother's life, slicing his throat and letting him die in a truly grisly fashion. That ghastly scene has seemingly only whetted Dexter's appetite for more, but, as we discover, things are not going to plan. A number of his victims are escaping, Sgt James Doakes (Erik King) has become suspicious and is constantly tailing him, and Dexter seems unable to kill anyone.

Not only that but Dexter's finding it very difficult to live a "normal" life, going bowling with his work colleagues and holding down a relationship with his girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz). Frankly he can't handle it. No wonder that he's itching to kill again, just as soon as he can give Doakes the slip. Meanwhile, off the coast of Miami, two scuba divers are about to make an awful discovery...

This efficient opener - which neatly picks up from the end of the first series - sets the scene for what becomes an even stronger season as the police inch nearer to trapping Dexter and revealing his gruesome crimes. The programme maintains its high-quality production values, the script is slick and the plot is gripping. Michael C. Hall continues to impress in the title role while the ensemble cast - especially Jennifer Carpenter as Dexter's cop sister Debra - are on strong form.

If you thought the first series was good, this second series is knockout. Don't miss it.

We love this series. One of the few we watch on SkyPlus (the only way to watch TV). And the opening title is the best! Buying the books, listening to the music, looking for the Tee shirt.
