When reporter Ben Anderson (pictured, left) spent two months with a unit of Grenadier Guards in the Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan in 2007, he met some extraordinary men. One of them was Lance Corporal Jack Mizon (pictured, right), a brave 24-year-old who has seen and experienced more than most men of his age. On his journey, Anderson accompanies Mizon as he faces an eight-hour battle with the Taliban. This one-off documentary also follows Mizon as he returns to the UK.
Over three weeks, Mizon lost one of his friends in a roadside-bomb attack and a suicide bomber hit the convoy he was travelling in - killing another of his friends. Mizon was sent to a psychiatrist to talk through his experiences. The only way forward for him, though, was to try to stop thinking about the incidents and keep going.
After an incredible 81 days out on operations, Mizon comes back to the UK where he serves in the Queen's Company of the Grenadier Guards. But Mizon finds it hard to re-adjust to the routine of Army life back in the barracks. Within weeks, he's on punishment duty and gets involved in fights. He is then absent without leave and flees the country - only to come back to the UK a few weeks later and hand himself in to the police. Despite being awarded a mention in Dispatches for bravery, Mizon is demoted back to the ranks.

I've just watched this documentary and felt I needed to say something. I thought it was an amazing account of a soldiers experience on the front line in Afganistan. A brilliant report from Ben Anderson. I hope Jack reads these messages as would like to say to him, I wish him all the luck in the future, I cant imagine how difficlt it must be to experience something like that. You showed courage, honour and bravery and I feel sorry that you were let down on your return and not giving the support and respect you deserved. I'm a nurse and this reminded me of a young soldier I met once in the A & E department I was working in, who like yourself hadn't been given adequate support following the trauma he had experienced in Iraq. Jack, you're an amazing person, I hope you find happiness and peace in your life. Wendy x
