Roman Mysteries is an exciting children's drama set in the Roman empire in the chaotic period of 79AD. Based on the novels of Caroline Lawrence, it follows four young friends - (pictured, from left) Lupus (Harry Stott), Jonathan (Eli Machover), Nubia (Rebekah Brookes-Murrell) and Flavia (Francesca Isherwood) - as they go on adventures and work together, solving puzzling mysteries.

In this first episode of the second series, a ship arrives carrying a team of gladiators. Nubia thinks her missing brother is one of them. Jonathan's curiosity puts him in a difficult situation when he must fight one of these dangerous men. Meanwhile Flavia and Nubia have an equally frightening encounter of their own when they have to deal with a ravenous beast.

The quality sets and costumes are highly realistic, making the stories very believable. It works well as a part-fantasy, part-history series and deals with both modern and historical issues such as violence, prejudice and politics. And while it's guaranteed to hold the attention of children, adults may also find that they learn a thing or two about Roman history.
