A new autumn run of Storyville kicks off with an insightful re-opening of an infamous case.

Roman Polanski (pictured) is admired and respected as one of the world's great film directors. But his reputation has been forever tarnished by his public conviction for having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old, some 30 years ago, and by his subsequent flight from America to avoid going to jail.

In her riveting reopening of this controversial and very complex case, film-maker Marina Zenovich fashions a perceptive and intelligent exploration of what really happened, and casts a different light on Polanski's decision as well as the workings of the American legal system.

Revisiting all of the key players - the victim, the lawyers and the media - the film looks at the conduct of the judge, whose handling of the case was definitely unusual. The documentary also includes insightful interviews from the present and brings new comprehension and clarity to events long clouded by myths and presumptions.

I want to thank Jennifer sincerely for opening up her life and experience so that others can understand what a late thirties/early 40s childless and anxious single woman with no familial or partner support goes through in this life. 'Hope that since the prog was made that life has given her more than she ever dreamed of having. The beeb should show this documentary again soon.

This programme struck a chord for me as my partner has ovarian cancer and another friend has coliatus. My partner josie is of particular concern right now and her fight for life has really hit home. My particular journey has been in the UK and closer to home but still traumatic and I thought Jennifer was very honest in her confusion. I have felt torn in my own way also.
