This dark futuristic thriller is a brutal, noisy, disturbing and dazzling whirlwind of a movie. Part sci-fi, part whodunit, it's set in LA on the eve of the new millennium. Ralph Fiennes (pictured, with Angela Bassett) plays ex-cop Lenny Nero, a black-market trader who deals in stolen dreams, especially sex and violence. Filmed on digital tape, the experiences can be replayed by buyers on a special headset - originally developed for the police - which makes them a participant. But things go wrong when a tape emerges showing a murder of a cop. Nero is plunged into a maze of paranoia and deception - and uncovers a conspiracy that threatens to blow LA apart.
Released in 1995, this very tough and controversial film from director Kathryn Bigelow builds into a chilling vision of the future. Highly recommended.
Did you know? In one scene, Mace (Bassett) says to Lenny (Fiennes) "Right Here Right Now". This piece of dialogue was sampled for use on Fatboy Slim's 1999 hit single Right Here Right Now.
