Be prepared for a bleak, downbeat and terribly sad two-part close to what has been a strong series of the detective series starring Trevor Eve (pictured) as DS Boyd. You will need to keep your wits about you, especially in the dark flashback passages, as there's a lot going on here, much of it rather grim.
At the scene of a road accident, a DNA link is found that is connected to a horrific murder in the Bosnia/Serbia conflict. This brings back haunting memories for Eve (Tara FitzGerald), who came across the dreadful slaying while working on mass war graves. Boyd leads his cold-case team into action, vowing to track down the ring of war criminals, all of whom are now living and working in the UK. There are repercussions for Boyd in his private life when the team discovers a hard drugs connection.
It's a powerful finish to the series, with some terrific acting from FitzGerald, but it's overstretched as a two-hour, two-parter. Like many of the recent stories, it would have worked better if it had been a self-contained 90-minute episode, with less chase sequences and arty-farty filming. Still good, though. Concludes tomorrow night.
